Types of Federal Education Grants

Sometimes people may choose to skip out on getting a higher education due to how expensive it is. Many don’t realize that there are federal grant opportunities for those who want to get a higher education. Grants are a popular assistance option for people because they do not need to be paid back!

Why Get a Higher Education?

Not only can getting a higher education be costly, but people may also wonder, “what’s the point?” However, there are plenty of benefits that come along with getting a higher education. Benefits include:

  • Earning More Money
  • More Career Opportunities
  • Better Time Management Skills
  • Obtaining New Skills
  • Improving Self-Esteem
  • Socializing Opportunities

Earning More Money

One of the biggest benefits to a higher education is the fact that you will generally earn more money. In fact, people that have a bachelor’s degree make an average of $900 more every week compared to those that have a lower level of education. For example, young adults between 22 to 27 years old that have a bachelor’s degree could make roughly $44,000 a year while young adults in the same age group with just a highschool diploma would make an average of $30,000 a year.

More Career Opportunities

A higher education can mean a world of difference when it comes to available work opportunities. Not only can it provide guidance when trying to figure out what career path/industry students want to pursue but it can also provide more opportunities. Many well-paying jobs require a higher education to qualify for a position! When you have this education, you may find more available job opportunities that can also give good financial support as well.

Better Time Management Skills

Getting a higher education isn’t just some walk in the park. There are countless deadlines and due dates that students need to work around accordingly. Students will need to plan around this which can lead to better time management skills.

Obtaining New Personal Skills

Pursuing a higher education means that students have the opportunity to learn new skills. For example, let’s say someone is in school to become a nurse. They will learn health skills that are not only helpful in their career but in life as well!

While there are handy skills that you can learn about for your career, people can also work on their communication skills. Students may be required to write papers, speak in front of the class etc. This can help people develop better communication skills.

Finally, another popular skill that people may improve from getting a higher education includes their critical thinking skills. Problem solving is an important part of getting an education. This can help people improve their critical thinking skills.

Improving Self-Esteem

Getting a higher education may help people improve their self-esteem. College is hard work and requires a lot of time, effort, and more. Accomplishing this can help people improve their self-esteem. Students can be proud of what they get done and feel better about themselves!

Socializing Opportunities

Regardless of whether you choose to pursue your higher education in person or online, you may be able to get more socializing opportunities. You can find opportunities to socialize with your peers that are also aiming to improve their future with a higher education. There are a variety of people in college that come from unique places!

Popular Federal Education Grants

There are a lot of grant opportunities available that may be able to help. The government understands how expensive getting a higher education can be. That is why they offer assistance opportunities that may be able to help with the cost! Popular federal education grants include:

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
  • Pell Grant
  • Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

This grant can provide up to $4,000 every year in financial aid to eligible students. Sadly, this grant isn’t available at every educational institution. You can see if this is an option at your school by checking with your financial aid office. If approved to receive funds you may receive them through your student account, by getting paid directly, or with a combination of these methods.

Pell Grant

This is a popular federal grant option because it can provide students funding of up to $6,495 (however this number generally changes every year). This is an opportunity for undergraduate students that want to either get their bachelor’s degree or a professional academic credential.  How much you will be able to receive depends on factors like your cost of attendance, expected family contribution, etc.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

Individuals that want to become a teacher may be able to benefit from the federal TEACH grant. Students can receive up to $4,000 every year! However, it is only available for those who are becoming teachers that meet other criteria, not all students.

How to Get an Education Grant from the Government

Another benefit to grants is the fact that the process is relatively easy! The first step that students must take is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application is what students fill out to request financial aid when pursuing a higher education. Once the application is filled out and submitted, then students will need to wait for the response that indicates if they are eligible to receive financial assistance.

Other Government Education Assistance

Besides grants there are other ways the government can provide support to those who need help affording education. Other assistance options include:

Financial Aid Program

This program is actually a type of loan assistance option! Federal Perkins Loans can assist undergraduate and graduate students in financial need to meet the cost of postsecondary education. This loan has a fixed interest rate and must be repaid after a nine-month grace period following the date that a student is no longer enrolled. Enrolled students must be attending school at least on a half-time basis. These loans can be worth up to $5,500 for undergraduate students every year and $8,000 for graduate students every year.

Federal Work-Study Program

This is another educational assistance program that can help eligible undergraduate and graduate students. The federal work-study program provides students the opportunity for part-time employment that encourages the progression of a student in both school and at work. How much the student will make is based on a variety of different factors. Your school’s financial aid office would have information about this assistance option.

Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program

This is an assistance option that gives fellowships through graduate academic departments, programs, and more to eligible graduate students that demonstrate high-level ability and are dealing with financial hardship. This is only for those who plan on pursuing the highest possible degree available in their field of study! Students cannot apply to this program directly but instead must do so through the school

Overall

There are a variety of ways that the government aims to help people handle the cost of getting a higher education. Whether through grants that don’t need to be repaid or other education assistance opportunities, students have more support than they may realize. A great place to start looking at available opportunities is with your school’s financial aid office!
